Dr. Seuss has said, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.” And, Richmond International Raceway is doing just that, as staff members participated in Read Across America Day on March 2nd!

Staff members from RIR helped kick off Laburnum Elementary’s Race to Read program by reading “The World According to Humphrey,” a book about a lovable hamster and the world he is living in. The group of 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students listened closely as each staff member took their turn to read a section of the first chapter of the book. At the kickoff party, each student received their very own copy of “The World According to Humphrey” so they could follow along.

Read Across America Day is a national program that honors Dr. Seuss on his birthday. RIR has been participating in this program for many years at Laburnum Elementary, and has seen great success in growing kids’ love for reading.

The Race to Read program encourages students to uncover the hidden world a book can provide. The program gets students excited to read with questions and activities for every chapter. Students are encouraged to log on to a special Humphrey website to answer the questions correctly in hopes to win a real life Humphrey the hamster! Laburnum Elementary’s Humphrey the hamster lives in the library so students can visit with him while they check out books.

Read Across America and the Race to Read program are another example of the impact RIR makes in the Richmond area through its community efforts. By participating in this program, RIR is helping to shape the minds of young scholars.

“RIR is proud to participate in the Race to Read program and Read Across America Day,” said Dennis Bickmeier, President of Richmond International Raceway. “The staff here at RIR is happy to excite kids about reading and encourage them to explore the world that reading can open.”

Now, the students at Laburnum Elementary are off to read their new book and learn as they go. In the words of Dr. Seuss, RIR offers this advice: “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.”
