Richmond International Raceway believes in generations. Grandparents, parents, and kids all coming to the race track together to create once-in-a-lifetime memories. RIR prides itself on being family-friendly and offering something unique even for the littlest of NASCAR fans.

Today, at a kids-only press conference, NASCAR announced that kids 12 & younger will be admitted FREE to all NASCAR XFINITY Series and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series races starting in 2017. While this is an overall industry-wide initiative, RIR has been admitting kids 12 & younger FREE for NASCAR XFINITY Series race for many years.  We also offer special kids pricing for all grandstands at NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races, as well. Kids tickets are $25 OFF the regular adult price in every section and start at just $10. When RIR moved to a three-day schedule for the April 2016 race, the kids 12 and younger FREE initiative was extended to Friday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Pole Qualifying day.

This announcement was a part of a new week-long youth initiative called Kids Drive NASCAR, highlighting the importance kids play in growing the sport of NASCAR.

“This sport was built on generations coming to the race track together, and I am proud to be part of an industry that is focused on its heritage and its future with this industry-wide youth initiative,” said Dennis Bickmeier, President of Richmond International Raceway.  “For years, we have been at the forefront of offering great kid-friendly prices and activities, and many of our partners, have focused their efforts on making sure our young fans not only have an amazing time at the event but learn about the sport at the same time.  In April 2016, part of the strategic shift back to day racing was to get more families to the track to create those irreplaceable memories of attending a NASCAR race.”

Part of that stronger kid presence will be evident during the September 2016 NASCAR weekend is the Kids’ High-Five Tunnel on Friday, September 9th. The first 50 kids 12 & younger who stop by the RIR Kids Club Tent on the Midway will have the chance to high-five their favorite NASCAR XFINITY Series drivers on the track during driver introductions for the Virginia529 College Savings NASCAR XFINITY Series race. This unique experience is one small way we can say thanks to the youngest NASCAR fans during Fan Appreciation Weekend. This is where the future stars of the sport collide with the future fans of the sport.

That’s not all you will see before the Virginia529 College Savings 250. During pre-race ceremonies, Cub Scout Pack 735 will lead fans in the Pledge of Allegiance making it the third NASCAR XFINITY Series race they’ve had this honor.

Beyond being the entitlement partner for Friday night’s race, Virginia529 College Savings Plan also offers the Virginia529 Kids Zone Powered by the Science Museum of Virginia. Here, families can come together to participate in STEM-related activities, games, and interactive exhibits. The Virginia529 Kids Zone is located in the beautiful indoor and outdoor horticulture garden, and is open throughout race weekend.

“The Virginia 529 Kids Zone, along with the Science Museum of Virginia, is a great example of delivering a focused effort on teaching kids the science behind the sport,” said Bickmeier.  “For years, they have led by example with a focused effort that teaching the kids about the sport in a hands on way and helping them understand what is happening when they watch the cars from the grandstand helps drive their love for NASCAR.”
