RIR lived up to its reputation as “The Action Track” with sparks flying on the track and off during a successful Federated Auto Parts 400, the crown jewel of the inaugural Fan Appreciation Weekend. With the conclusion of the regular season finale, Richmond International Raceway is already looking forward to another exciting season of on-track events in 2017.

The Who’s Your Driver NASCAR weekend featured the Virginia529 College Savings 250 (XFINITY Series) and the Federated Auto Parts 400 (Sprint Cup Series). The common link between the two races was the success by the Toyota Camrys of Joe Gibbs Racing.

In Friday night’s Virginia529 College Savings 250, Kyle Busch took the lead and never looked back leading an impressive 197 laps en route to his sixth NASCAR XFINITY Series win at RIR.

The Toyota sweep was completed on Saturday night as Chesterfield, Virginia native Denny Hamlin started and finished first in the Sprint Cup Series regular season finale. It was Hamlin’s third career win at RIR and first victory at the track since 2010. For Toyota, it was the manufacturers’ 10th win in the last 16 Cup races at RIR.

“Ranging from the Fan Appreciation Weekend to Virginia native Denny Hamlin winning on his home track, the excitement level coming out of last weekend is something I haven’t seen in my five years,” said Dennis Bickmeier, President of Richmond International Raceway. “The overwhelmingly positive energy from fans and the NASCAR community coming out of the weekend will help us build momentum heading to 2017.”

NASCAR will return to RIR for the first of two annual weekends of racing in April with the TOYOTA OWNERS 400 (April 30) and the ToyotaCare 250 NASCAR XFINITY Series (April 29).

“The next weekend of day racing provides more families with an opportunity to create lifetime memories with their children at the Action Track,” continued Bickmeier. “RIR is committed to growing the NASCAR base and will be planning a host of activities for families and celebrating “Generations” of history shared over the years by our longtime fans and new ones.”

In the fall, night racing returns with the race to decide who will make the 2017 Chase as part of the second annual Fan Appreciation Weekend. The action begins Friday with the Virginia529 College Savings 250 (September 8) and continues on Saturday with the Federated Auto Parts 400 (September 9) regular season finale.

“We saw a tremendous response from guests with the Inaugural Fan Appreciation weekend,” said Bickmeier. “We are already planning to take Fan Appreciation Weekend to the next level in 2017.”

Season ticket renewals for the 2017 season will be shared with our loyal fans in the coming weeks. On sale dates for new season tickets will be announced soon. For more information on tickets and what’s happening at RIR and around the Commonwealth in racing, please visit RIR.com.
