Project Hero’s UnitedHealthcare Memorial Challenge Rides Around Richmond Raceway
On Thursday, a different kind of lap took place at Richmond Raceway (Richmond). Cyclists taking part in the UnitedHealthCare Memorial Challenge (Challenge) began their day with a lap around America’s Premier Short Track. The cycling challenge is organized by Project Hero, a non-profit organization that helps Veterans and First Responders impacted by post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
As part of the second day of the Challenge, cyclists began their trip in Glen Allen, Va. The group rode from Glen Allen to Williamsburg for a total of 91 miles. Along their journey, the group rode to Richmond for a unique view of one of the region’s premier attractions. The Challenge will end today as cyclists leave Williamsburg and bike to Fort Lee in central Virginia.
“It was a great day welcoming Project Hero to America’s Premier Short Track,” said Richmond President Dennis Bickmeier. “Project Hero and John Wordin are doing outstanding work raising awareness of PTSD and making a difference in the lives of thousands of Veterans and First Responders. We look forward to welcoming Project Hero back to the track for another ride in the future.”
“Project Hero is an organization that brings our Nation’s Veterans and First Responders together through sports, activities, and community - helping them overcome challenges associated with their visible and invisible wounds. Being the catalyst for the adapted sports movement, Project Hero continues to be the industry leader,” said John Wordin, President & Founder of Project Hero. “Richmond Raceway provided our Veterans a great experience today. Riding on the track is a great experience for our Vets. Seeing the great smiles as they raced around was the best experience. We would like to thank Dennis and everyone at Richmond for providing this opportunity and we look forward to working with them and our Richmond VA HUB in the future.”
The Challenge is just one way Project Hero shows support for our nation’s Veterans and First Responders. Throughout the year, the organization holds various Ride 2 Recovery challenges in different parts of the country. In addition to the challenge, Project Hero Community Centers work to provide lower costs and reduce drug-based therapies. The organization also builds and provides adaptive bikes to Veterans and First Responders.
