RICHMOND, Va. (June 12, 2020) — Richmond Raceway (Richmond) hosted 10 Henrico County Public Schools‘ (HCPS) high schools to recognize the Class of 2020 with an unforgettable Graduation Victory Lap. Richmond welcomed more than 3,200 high school graduates, along with their families and friends, to celebrate over three days at America‘s Premier Short Track.

The Graduation Victory Lap gave seniors and their families a chance to “process” safely as a group and enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime Class of 2020 experience. Seniors arrived in decorated vehicles and were led by the official Richmond Toyota Camry pace car onto the iconic ¾-mile D-shaped oval to parade around the track. Graduates could listen to “Pomp and Circumstance” on HCPS‘ student radio station while cruising toward Richmond‘s start/finish line. Graduates‘ names were announced in front of school faculty standing across the front stretch as principals waved a checkered flag for each graduate crossing the finish line.

“It has been an unforgettable week hosting the Graduation Victory Lap for 10 Henrico County high schools at Richmond Raceway,” said Richmond President Dennis Bickmeier. “High school graduation is a seminal moment in the lives of graduates and their families, so it was our honor to play a part in recognizing the Class of 2020. While graduation may have been different than expected, we hope we provided a memorable experience as they crossed our historic finish line to the next phase of their lives.”

Henrico County Public Schools participating in a Graduation Victory Lap included Deep Run High School, Mills E. Godwin High School, Douglas S. Freeman High School, Glen Allen High School, Hermitage High School, J.R. Tucker High School, Highland Springs High School, Varina High School, Henrico High School, and The Academy at Virginia Randolph.

The Graduation Victory Lap at Richmond was part of HCPS‘s Graduation Celebration 2020, which was developed following June commencement ceremonies being canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. HCPS also hosted virtual Graduation Ceremony Watch Parties for each high school as part of Graduation Celebration 2020.
